This week brings a mix of conditions across the Riviera Maya. Overall, the northern coastline is performing well — particularly the Hotel Zone — while southern beaches from Playa del Carmen down through Tulum are seeing moderate sargassum arrivals. Cleanup crews remain active at all major resort areas. Data from the USF Sargassum Watch System shows a mid-sized belt drifting toward the Yucatán coast, but current projections suggest it will make a gradual arrival rather than a sudden surge.

Beach-by-Beach Breakdown

North Cancún — Minimal Sargassum ✅

North Cancún is looking fantastic this week. The Hotel Zone beaches from Punta Cancún northward are virtually sargassum-free, with turquoise water and soft white sand. This is an improvement over last week when scattered patches were visible along the shoreline. Resort cleanup crews have been proactive, but honestly, there's little work for them right now. If you're arriving this week, you'll find pristine conditions.

South Cancún — Moderate Sargassum

South Cancún has a different story. Moderate sargassum is arriving along the southern stretches of the Hotel Zone and into the Riviera Cancún corridor. Resort beaches are being cleaned daily, so the managed areas look fine — but walk a few hundred meters in either direction and you'll see accumulation on the sand. Water clarity is slightly reduced close to shore.

Playa Gaviota Azul — Minimal Sargassum ✅

Playa Gaviota Azul continues to benefit from its sheltered position in the Hotel Zone. Conditions have improved noticeably this week — virtually no seaweed on the sand and crystal-clear water. This is one of the best beaches to visit right now if you want a guaranteed clean experience.

Isla Mujeres — Minimal Sargassum ✅

Isla Mujeres remains the jewel of the week. Playa Norte is spotless with calm, clear Caribbean water perfect for swimming. The island's western-facing orientation continues to shield it from the worst sargassum arrivals. A great option if you want a day trip from Cancún to escape any seaweed concerns entirely.

Puerto Morelos — Moderate Sargassum

Puerto Morelos is holding steady at moderate levels. The reef offshore helps break up incoming sargassum mats, but enough is getting through to create noticeable build-up along the beach. Local crews are working hard, and the town's main swimming areas are being cleared each morning. Afternoon arrivals may see more accumulation.

Playa del Carmen — Moderate Sargassum

Playa del Carmen is experiencing moderate arrivals this week, consistent with what we've seen for the past two weeks. Fifth Avenue beach access points are being cleaned regularly, and most resort frontage looks acceptable. The water has a slight brownish tint near the shore in spots, but conditions improve quickly once you wade out a few meters.

Cozumel — Minimal Sargassum ✅

Cozumel continues its excellent run. The island's western shore — where all the main beaches and resorts sit — remains essentially sargassum-free. Snorkeling and diving conditions are superb. If clean beaches are your top priority, Cozumel is hard to beat right now.

Akumal — Moderate-to-Heavy Sargassum

Akumal is seeing heavier arrivals this week compared to last. The main bay has moderate accumulation that crews are managing, but Half Moon Bay and surrounding areas have more significant build-up. Turtle snorkeling tours are still running, though visibility is reduced close to shore. This is a slight step down from last week's conditions.

Tulum — Moderate-to-Heavy Sargassum

Tulum continues to be one of the more affected areas along the coast. Beach clubs are investing heavily in daily cleanup, and their frontage is generally swimmable. However, the public beach stretches below the ruins have noticeable piles of sargassum, and the water color is affected. If you're visiting Tulum this week, stick to managed beach club areas for the best experience.

What to Expect This Week

  • 📈 Increasing trend: USF satellite data shows a moderate sargassum belt approaching from the southeast, expected to make landfall mid-week along southern beaches.
  • 🏖️ Best bets: North Cancún, Playa Gaviota Azul, Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel remain your safest choices for clean, swimmable beaches.
  • ⚠️ Watch zones: Tulum and Akumal may see a slight increase through Thursday. Beach club areas will stay managed.
  • 🌊 Water temps: A warm 28°C (82°F) across the coast — perfect for swimming where conditions allow.
  • 💡 Pro tip: Morning hours consistently offer the cleanest conditions at all beaches, as overnight arrivals haven't yet accumulated and crews are out early.
