Playa del Carmen's long, straight coastline faces east-northeast with no natural offshore barrier. Its central sections — near the ferry pier and 5th Avenue — receive the heaviest accumulation. High-profile beach clubs (Mamitas, Fusion, Zenzi) prioritize morning cleanup, but public stretches between clubs can lag behind.

In 2026, an out-of-season arrival in January deposited over 25 tons on Playa Mamitas, followed by a second event in February leaving 1,000+ tons on El Recodo. The most reliable window is December–February, though even that is no longer guaranteed. Cozumel is 45 minutes by ferry directly from the pier — the most practical escape option from PDC.
