Sargassum at Akumal: Bay, Reef, and Sea Turtles
Partial reef protection helps, but southerly location means early arrivals. Sea turtle snorkeling remains unaffected regardless of conditions.

Yal-Ku Lagoon — zero sargassum
Typical Monthly Risk — Often receives arrivals before Cancún
Akumal Bay is semi-enclosed and partially fronted by a reef, which provides some protection — but not immunity. Floating mats can clear the reef opening and accumulate in the bay, particularly during heavy events. Akumal's southerly position also means it typically receives arrivals earlier in the season than Cancún.
Importantly: Akumal's main draw is completely independent of beach conditions. Green and loggerhead sea turtles feed on seagrass in the bay year-round. Sargassum on the surface does not affect their presence or the snorkeling experience.
Yal-Ku Lagoon, 2km north of the main bay entrance, is a brackish tidal lagoon with excellent snorkeling and zero ocean sargassum exposure — one of the most underrated spots on the Riviera Maya.
