Frequently Asked Questions
Is this really free?
Yes. No account, no API key, no attribution requirements beyond the "HowIsTheSargassum.com" link that appears in the widget itself. Use it on as many pages as you like.
How often does the data update?
Every hour, using satellite imagery from the University of South Florida and real-time processing. The widget always shows the most current available data.
Can I customize the size?
Yes. Change the width and height attributes in the iframe code to fit your layout. The widget is responsive and adapts to its container. We recommend a minimum width of 240px and height of 130px.
Will it slow down my website?
No. The iframe loads independently and lazily — it won't block your page from loading. If the widget takes a moment to fetch data, the rest of your page is unaffected.
Can I embed multiple widgets on one page?
Yes. You can embed all 9 beaches on the same page if you like. Each loads independently.
What do the status levels mean?
Clear (green) — no sargassum. Light (yellow) — minimal presence, beach fully usable. Moderate (amber) — noticeable seaweed, cleanup active. Heavy (red) — significant accumulation, consider alternatives.
Do I need to update the code when conditions change?
Never. The widget fetches live data every time it loads. Once you paste the code, it stays accurate indefinitely.
Can I use this on a commercial website?
Yes. Hotels, resorts, tour operators, travel agencies — all welcome. The only requirement is that the HowIsTheSargassum.com link in the widget remains intact.
