Sargassum & Sea Turtles in Akumal: Can You Still Swim with Turtles in 2026?
Swimming with wild sea turtles at Akumal Bay is one of the Riviera Maya's most iconic experiences. But does sargassum ruin it? The honest answer is: sometimes, but less than you think.
About Akumal Bay
Akumal — meaning "Place of the Turtle" in Mayan — is a small bay on the Riviera Maya about 60 miles south of Cancún. A resident population of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) feeds year-round on the seagrass beds that carpet the bay floor, making it one of the most reliable places in the world to snorkel with wild sea turtles without needing a boat or a dive certification.
The challenge: Akumal is also one of the most sargassum-impacted beaches in Quintana Roo. Its open-facing coastline, southern location, and shallow bay structure mean it receives heavy arrivals from April through October.
The Impact of Sargassum on Turtle Encounters
Research from Operation Wallacea at Akumal Bay found that sargassum mats extending 80+ meters offshore can significantly reduce water quality in the bay — depleting oxygen, blocking sunlight, and making seagrass less suitable for turtle grazing. When conditions are this bad, turtles may move to different feeding areas within the bay or reduce surface activity.
However, three important points work in your favor:
- Turtles are present year-round — they don't leave the bay because of sargassum. Even on heavy sargassum days, turtles are still in the water.
- Conditions change rapidly — a heavy sargassum morning can become a clear afternoon as currents shift. Cleanup crews also work the beach daily.
- Go early — sargassum typically accumulates overnight and is at its worst before 9 AM. Arriving at 8–9 AM means you're there as cleanup crews clear the beach, and the water is often clearest in the morning before snorkelers churn up the sand.

Practical Tips for Your Akumal Visit
Alternatives if Akumal is Heavily Impacted
If you arrive at Akumal and conditions are bad, you have excellent nearby alternatives:
- Half Moon Bay — just north of Akumal Bay, often has slightly better visibility and fewer crowds. Also great for turtle sightings.
- Yal-ku Lagoon — a brackish lagoon 2km north of Akumal. Zero sargassum (lagoon, not open sea), colorful fish, and snorkeling in a unique ecosystem.
- Cozumel dive/snorkel tours — if turtle encounters are your priority and the whole Riviera Maya coast is having a bad sargassum day, the ferry to Cozumel's west coast takes 45 minutes and offers turtle sightings with zero seaweed.
