Best Hotels in Cozumel 2026 — Resorts for Snorkeling & Clear Water
Cozumel's west coast stays sargassum-free year-round — protected by the Cozumel Channel, which pushes open-water currents north rather than onto shore. Here's where to stay to make the most of the world's second-largest reef system, right from your resort.

Why Cozumel's West Coast Never Gets Sargassum
Cozumel sits roughly 18 kilometers off the coast of Playa del Carmen in a protected channel. The Cozumel Channel runs between the island and the mainland, and its currents flow south-to-north along the western shore — in the opposite direction to the sargassum drift. Sargassum mats that approach from the east hit the island's exposed east coast. They don't round the southern tip into the channel in any significant volume.
The eastern side of Cozumel is raw Caribbean — dramatic, beautiful, but unsuitable for swimming due to surf and rip currents. Nobody builds hotels there. Every resort, dive shop, beach club, and snorkel site is on the protected western shore. This means choosing Cozumel isn't just choosing a nice island — it's choosing structurally guaranteed clear water regardless of what sargassum is doing on the mainland.
Getting to Cozumel from Cancún
There's no direct passenger ferry from Cancún to Cozumel. The standard route is bus or taxi from Cancún to Playa del Carmen (roughly one hour on the ADO bus for about 90 pesos, or 30 minutes by taxi), then the ferry from Playa del Carmen's ferry terminal to Cozumel (about 45 minutes). Ultramar and Mexico Waterjets run multiple departures daily from early morning to evening — book ahead during holiday periods.
Alternatively, Cozumel has its own international airport with direct flights from many US cities. Flying directly into Cozumel eliminates the ferry transfer entirely and is worth considering if you're planning to base yourself on the island rather than combining with Cancún.
Best Hotels in Cozumel — 2026
Cozumel's hotel options range from downtown boutique properties to large all-inclusive resorts south of town. The all-inclusives sit on the best reef access in the island's southern hotel zone, while downtown properties put you within walking distance of restaurants, nightlife, and the ferry pier. All established hotels are on the west coast.

Even if your hotel offers shore snorkeling, a guided reef tour puts you at the best sites — Palancar Gardens, El Cielo's starfish beds, The Money Bar wall — with a boat, gear, and a local guide who knows exactly where to find the most marine life. Half-day catamaran tours depart from the downtown pier and typically visit two to three sites.

Bring Your Own Snorkel Set
Tour operators provide snorkel gear, but quality varies. If snorkeling is a priority — and in Cozumel, it should be — your own well-fitting mask makes a meaningful difference. Fogging, leaking, and ill-fitting equipment can ruin an otherwise spectacular dive. A quality set is one of the best investments you can make for a Caribbean trip.

Practical Tips for Cozumel
Cozumel uses the Mexican peso, but USD is widely accepted at tourist businesses. The island is very compact — you can rent a scooter or car for a day and circumnavigate the entire perimeter, including a stop at the rugged east coast beaches (don't swim there, but the scenery is dramatic). Downtown San Miguel has good dining at all price points, and several beach clubs south of town offer day passes with food and drinks included.
Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged and increasingly required at dive shops for gear rental. Most operators won't take you into the water with chemical sunscreen. Mineral SPF 50 is the standard.
