Playa Gaviota Azul Cancún — Complete Beach & Hotel Guide (2026)
Playa Gaviota Azul is the most central beach in Cancún's Hotel Zone and one of the best-maintained. Here's everything you need to know — conditions, the four resorts that sit on it, and what to do when the water is calling.

Where Exactly Is Playa Gaviota Azul?
Playa Gaviota Azul sits at roughly km 9 of Cancún's Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera), on the long western arc of the Hotel Zone's distinctive "7" shape. It's centrally located — north of the busier tourist strip near Señor Frog's, and well south of the northern tip near Puerto Cancún. The beach itself stretches for several hundred meters in front of the Riu Cancún, Hyatt Ziva, Sunscape, and Fiesta Americana Condesa resorts.
For context: the Hotel Zone is a narrow barrier island about 23km long. The northern stretches face the calmer Bay of Mujeres, while the southern end (Punta Nizuc) faces open Caribbean. Playa Gaviota Azul sits on the protected middle section, which gives it a slight geographic advantage over the southern Hotel Zone beaches during heavy sargassum arrivals.
Sargassum at Playa Gaviota Azul: The Honest Picture
Playa Gaviota Azul gets sargassum. There's no Hotel Zone beach that's completely immune — the entire stretch of coast faces the Caribbean, and during peak season (May through September) sargassum arrives across the board. What makes Gaviota Azul different isn't geography — it's infrastructure.
The four large all-inclusive resorts on this beach deploy cleanup crews before sunrise every morning during sargassum season. By 7am, the beach is typically clear of overnight accumulation. If you're on the sand at 9am, you usually won't know there was any. By mid-afternoon during a heavy day, arrivals may have built up again — but the morning window is real and reliable.

What to Do From Playa Gaviota Azul
The central Hotel Zone location makes Gaviota Azul an excellent base for day activities. You're minutes from the ferry to Isla Mujeres at Puerto Juárez, close to the main hotel strip's water sports, and within easy reach of one of the most unique underwater experiences in the region — the MUSA underwater sculpture museum.
MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) sits in shallow water between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, just a short boat ride from the Hotel Zone. Over 500 life-size sculptures installed on the seabed have become artificial reef habitat, now covered in coral and surrounded by fish. You can snorkel, dive, or take a glass-bottom boat tour — all departing from Cancún's Hotel Zone marina.
Underwater Museum
An underwater sculpture park of 500+ life-size works between Cancún and Isla Mujeres. Snorkel, dive, or take a glass‑bottom boat to see art turning into reef, with schools of fish and clear Caribbean water.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Required, Not Optional
Whether you're snorkeling at MUSA or just swimming at Gaviota Azul, standard chemical sunscreens are problematic in the Mexican Caribbean. Quintana Roo state law requires reef-safe mineral sunscreen at cenotes, and while enforcement at Hotel Zone beaches is softer, many resorts now ask guests to use mineral formulas. It's also better for the reef ecosystem you're paying to see.
Reef Safe Mineral Sunscreen
Reef/cenote safe, mineral-based SPF 50. Required at many cenotes and recommended throughout the Riviera Maya.

Getting to Playa Gaviota Azul
If you're staying at one of the four hotels on the beach, you're already there. For visitors coming from elsewhere in Cancún, the R-1 Hotel Zone bus runs the entire length of Blvd. Kukulcán for about 15 pesos. Ask for the Riu Cancún or Hyatt Ziva stop — both face directly onto Playa Gaviota Azul. Taxis from downtown Cancún take roughly 20 minutes.
There's no public parking lot directly at the beach. If you're driving from outside the Hotel Zone, the nearest publicly accessible beach access point is Playa Delfines further south, which has a free parking lot. From there, the beach is technically continuous but a long walk.
Beach Facilities & What to Expect
The beach in front of the resorts is maintained by those resorts and primarily accessible to guests. Public beach access in Mexico is legally guaranteed, but in practice the chairs, umbrellas, and facilities belong to the hotels. Non-guests can access the waterline and swim freely. If you want a sun lounger and service, the easiest option is a resort day pass — which gives you full resort access including pool, food, and drinks for the day.
Water conditions at Gaviota Azul are generally calmer than Playa Delfines (which sometimes has surf) and on par with the northern Hotel Zone. The bottom is sandy with occasional rock patches — water shoes are worth having during sargassum season when you can't always see the bottom clearly.
