Last updated: April 2026 · Based on USF Sargassum Watch System satellite data
The week of April 20, 2026 brings a mixed picture across the Mexican Caribbean — northern beaches are holding up well while southern stretches are feeling the pressure of an active Atlantic bloom. Here's the honest rundown of what you'll find at each of the 9 beaches we monitor, so you can plan your beach day without any unpleasant surprises.

Overall Conditions This Week
Atlantic sargassum bloom density tracked by the USF Sargassum Watch System shows a moderate-to-heavy belt pushing westward toward the Yucatán Peninsula. Northern Cancún is being partially shielded by favourable current angles, but beaches south of Puerto Morelos are taking a direct hit. Cleaning crews are active at most resorts — your experience will depend heavily on timing and luck.

Beach-by-Beach Breakdown
North Cancún — 🟢 Clear
The Hotel Zone's northern tip is in great shape this week. The beaches fronting the big all-inclusives are wide, clean, and the water is a clear turquoise. Cleaning equipment has had very little to do — this is about as good as it gets in late April. If you're flexible on location, this is your best bet right now.
Playa Gaviota Azul — 🟢 Clear
Gaviota Azul, Cancún's popular public beach in the heart of the Hotel Zone, is also looking excellent. The current is deflecting most incoming sargassum northward before it reaches the shore. Conditions here are suitable for families, snorkelling, and water sports. Enjoy it.
South Cancún — 🟠 Moderate
The southern end of the Hotel Zone is seeing moderate sargassum washes each morning. Crews at the large resort properties are collecting it by late morning, so afternoons are generally passable. Expect some odour earlier in the day and scattered clumps even after cleaning. Swim conditions are workable but not pristine.
Isla Mujeres — 🟢 Clear
Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is one of the standout performers this week. Its sheltered bay position and the island's orientation mean the north-facing beach rarely catches incoming sargassum directly. The calm, shallow water is perfect for swimming. A ferry ride from Cancún and absolutely worth it right now.
Cozumel — 🟢 Clear
Cozumel's west-facing beaches are largely sheltered from the Atlantic sargassum this week. The island's reef-protected shoreline means the water is calm and clear, and conditions are excellent for snorkelling and diving. The eastern shore has some accumulation, as is usual, but resort beaches on the leeward side are clean.
Puerto Morelos — 🟠 Moderate
Puerto Morelos sits right on the boundary between the cleaner north and the heavier south this week. There are moderate sargassum patches arriving in waves — some hours the beach looks fine, others it's messy. The reef just offshore does intercept some seaweed, which helps, but it's inconsistent. Check the live monitor before heading down.
Playa del Carmen — 🟠 Moderate
The seaweed situation in Playa del Carmen is moderate this week. Sargassum is washing in most mornings, and while resort staff along the beach strip are working hard to manage it, the public beach areas see less intervention. If you're staying at a resort, you'll likely get a cleaner experience than the free-access sections. Water visibility is reduced.
Akumal — 🔴 Heavy
Akumal is having a tough week. Significant sargassum is piling up on the shore, and while the bay still has some areas where sea turtles can be spotted closer to the rocks, the main swimming area is compromised. The smell is noticeable. If turtle snorkelling is your goal, check conditions daily — they can shift overnight.
Tulum — 🔴 Heavy
Tulum's beaches are taking a heavy hit this week. Dense mats of sargassum are covering significant stretches of shoreline, and the characteristic scent of decomposing seaweed is strong at several beach clubs. The water beyond the sargassum line is still swimmable, but getting to it is unpleasant. We'd suggest adjusting expectations or shifting plans to a cenote day instead.
What to Expect This Week
- The Atlantic bloom is active — conditions can shift within 24 hours, especially south of Puerto Morelos.
- Morning arrivals are heaviest; conditions generally improve by mid-afternoon as crews clean and tides shift.
- North Cancún, Gaviota Azul, Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel are your best bets for clean swimming this week.
- Tulum and Akumal visitors should prepare for significant sargassum and consider inland alternatives on heavy days.
- Check our live map before leaving your accommodation — conditions can change by the hour.
