Sargassum at Tulum: What to Expect

Tulum's coastline runs almost due north–south and faces directly east into the open Caribbean. There is no offshore reef close enough to deflect approaching mats, no sheltering bay, no island to the windward side. At the southern end of the Riviera Maya, it is consistently the first major beach to receive sargassum — and the last to clear.

In 2026, over 1,200 tons was removed from the hotel zone by April — more than triple the same period in prior years. Zofemat crews start clearing at 5am daily. Most beach clubs have their stretch cleared before 9am on light-to-moderate days. During heavy arrivals, offshore mats make the water murky even when the sand looks clean.

Tulum's appeal extends far beyond its coastline. The clifftop Mayan ruins, Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos, and Yal-Ku Lagoon in Akumal are all 15–30 minutes away and completely unaffected by sargassum.
