Visiting Tips

Getting There

Ferry from Cancun runs frequently. The trip takes about 15 minutes and offers beautiful views.

Calm Waters

Isla Mujeres faces the protected bay side of the island, so waves are almost always gentle — great for families.

Golf Carts

Rent a golf cart to explore the whole island. It's a fun way to visit the southern cliffs and lighthouse.

Day Trip Tip

Last ferry back to Cancun is around 11 PM. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the island crowd-free in the morning.

Playa Norte faces west across the Bahía de Mujeres toward the Cancún mainland. Sargassum arrives from the east. The island, combined with the bay orientation, means the Atlantic sargassum current has to travel around the entire northern tip of Isla Mujeres to reach this beach — a route that almost never materializes in practice.

During the heaviest events of 2025 — the worst sargassum year on record for Quintana Roo — Playa Norte remained in clear or light condition on most days when Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and South Cancún were dealing with heavy arrivals. The turquoise, shallow, calm water is available in June, July, and August when most mainland beaches are at their worst.

Brief accumulation events can occur when unusual wind patterns push sargassum northward into the bay, but they are short-lived. Ferry service from Gran Puerto (30 min), Puerto Juárez near Cancún North (20 min), and Punta Sam runs frequently — making Isla Mujeres the most accessible clear-water escape from Cancún during sargassum season.
